A Step-by-Step Guide for Steelton, PA Drivers After a Car Accident

In the chaotic moments after a car accident in Steelton, PA, it can be hard to think clearly. The team at BL Personal Injury Attorneys has compiled this essential checklist to help you protect your rights and your potential claim.

  • 1. Prioritize Safety and Call 911: Your health is the top priority. Check yourself and your passengers for injuries. If anyone is hurt, or if the accident is more than a minor fender-bender, call 911 immediately. This will dispatch both medical help and the police to the scene. A police report is a critical piece of evidence.
  • 2. Move to a Safe Location (If Possible): If your vehicle is operational and the accident is minor, move it to the shoulder of the road to avoid further collisions. Turn on your hazard lights. If the car cannot be moved, stay inside with your seatbelt on until help arrives.
  • 3. Exchange Information (But Don't Admit Fault): Exchange essential information with the other driver(s): name, address, phone number, driver's license number, license plate number, and insurance company/policy number. Be polite, but do not apologize or say the accident was your fault, as this can be used against you later.
  • 4. Document the Scene Thoroughly: Use your smartphone to take pictures and videos of everything. Capture damage to all vehicles from multiple angles, the accident scene layout, skid marks, traffic signs, and any contributing factors like weather conditions. Also, take a photo of the other driver's license and insurance card.
  • 5. Identify Witnesses: If there were any witnesses to the crash, politely ask for their names and contact information. Independent witness testimony can be very powerful for your case in Steelton, PA.
  • 6. Seek Medical Attention Promptly: Even if you feel fine, it's crucial to see a doctor or visit an urgent care clinic as soon as possible. Some serious injuries, like whiplash or concussions, may not show symptoms immediately. This also creates an official medical record of your injuries linked to the accident.
  • 7. Report the Accident to Your Insurance Company: Notify your own insurance company that an accident occurred. Stick to the basic facts. You do not need to give a recorded statement to the other driver's insurance company.
  • 8. Contact a Steelton, PA Car Accident Injury Lawyer: Before you agree to any settlement or give a recorded statement to the other driver's insurer, contact BL Personal Injury Attorneys. An experienced attorney will protect your rights and handle all communications with the insurance companies to ensure you are not taken advantage of.

Steelton, PA Insights: Population,
Zip Codes, Influence, and Service Areas

After initial habitation by Susquehannock Indians and subsequent nearby Harrisburg establishment, the area was owned by the Kelker family of Harrisburg by the 1800s. The 100-acre area was chosen in 1866 by Samuel Morse Felton Sr., president of the Pennsylvania Steel Company, to begin construction of a steel mill. This particular site was favored because of the location's proximity to the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Pennsylvania Canal, and the nearby iron mine in Cornwall, Lebanon County. The land was purchased from owners Henry A. and Rudolph F. Kelker; then, steel pioneer Alexander Lyman Holley was chosen to build the mill along the Susquehanna River, which was completed by 1867 (along with a mansion for Felton), and began operation on May 15, 1868. Originally named "Baldwin" after Matthias W. Baldwin, founder of the Baldwin Locomotive Works, by 1871 it had changed to "Steel Works" after the existence of another Baldwin, Pennsylvania Post Office, and finally "Steelton" in 1879 after confusion of the Post Office with the steel mill itself. It was incorporated as a borough on January 19, 1880. The extensive steel works of the Pennsylvania Steel Company later became operated by Bethlehem Steel, ArcelorMittal, and currently Cleveland-Cliffs. Also present at one time were brickyards, a flouring mill, and machine shops.
